Course Description

This course equips students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for success in intravenous (IV) therapy. Topics include various types of IV therapy, patient assessment, skill development, correct IV insertion and management techniques, pharmacological considerations, patient preparation across the lifespan, documentation and reporting procedures, and adherence to professional conduct and scope of practice. Completion of this 30-hour IV Therapy course is required for certification and prepares participants for effective IV management in a clinical setting.

Learner Outcomes

The goal for students is employment as a Home Health Aide at a healthcare facility.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of common terminology.
  • Perform hands-on skills practice and evaluation check-off
  • Demonstrate knowledge of central venous line access and maintaining/managing central lines.
  • Recognize relationship between intravenous therapy and the body’s homeostatic and regulatory functions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of infection control in IV therapy practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of principles of compatibility and incompatibility of drugs and solutions.
  • Identify formulas used to calculate fluid and drug administration rate
  • Recognize the signs/symptoms of complications during the delivery of fluids and medications Identify location and function of the peripheral veins used for vein puncture.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of methods of administering drugs intravenously.
  • Perform procedures for vein punctures.
  • Identify equipment used in intravenous therapy administration
  • Demonstrate an understanding of psychological preparation and support.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN)
